Questions families ask
Plain answers to the questions families ask most. Don’t see yours? Text or call Judy, in English or in Spanish.
What is an end-of-life doula?
A trained, non-medical companion who supports a dying person and their family emotionally, spiritually and practically, before, during and after a death. You may also hear the terms death doula or death midwife.
Do you replace hospice?
No. Hospice provides medical care, nursing and equipment, and it does that well. Hospice nurses and aides care for many patients and have limited time at each bedside. I add unhurried time, presence and guidance, and I work alongside your hospice team.
Are you a nurse? Do you give medical care?
No. I don’t give medication, medical advice or nursing care. For anything medical I’ll always direct you to your hospice team or doctor.
Does someone have to be dying to work with you?
Not at all. Many people plan ahead while they are healthy. Peace of Mind Planning is for any adult, at any age.
Is it ever too late to call?
No. Even in the last days or hours, support can make a difference. Call or text (407) 989-5949 and I’ll tell you straight away whether I can be there.
Is this covered by insurance or Medicare?
No. End-of-life doula services are private pay and are not covered by Medicare, Medicaid or most insurance. Payment plans are available. If you have an HSA or FSA, ask your plan administrator whether doula services qualify.
Where do you work?
In homes, hospice houses, hospitals, assisted living and memory care communities across Central Florida, including Seminole, Orange, Osceola, Lake and Volusia counties. Families who live elsewhere can work with me by phone and video. confirm area
Do you speak Spanish?
Yes. I support patients and families in English and in Spanish, and I can explain things to each member of the family in the language they understand best. The whole website is also available en español.
Can I arrange support for a parent if I live far away?
Yes. You can arrange and pay for support on your parent’s behalf, and I’ll keep you updated by phone, text or video after each visit.
Do you work with families of every faith?
Yes. I’m comfortable with prayer, scripture, ritual and clergy when they bring comfort, and just as comfortable with families who are not religious. Your loved one’s beliefs guide everything I do.
What happens in the free conversation?
We talk for about 30 minutes about your loved one, what is happening now and what would help. You’ll leave with a clearer picture and, if you want it, a suggested plan and price. There is no obligation.
How quickly will you reply?
Usually within a few hours, from 9 am to 7 pm. If the end may be near, please call or text rather than sending a message. confirm hours
